Hands-on treatment refers to the range of manual therapy techniques a physiotherapist applies directly to the body to reduce pain, release tension, restore movement and support healing. Rather than relying on exercise alone, these techniques address the physical restrictions and tissue problems that are often at the root of pain and limited mobility.
At PhysioFitness, hands-on treatment is central to how we work. It forms the foundation of most treatment plans, either as the primary approach or alongside exercise and rehabilitation.
We draw on a wide range of hands-on techniques, selected and combined based on your individual assessment and what your body needs at each stage of treatment.
Joint Manipulation & Mobilisation involves carefully applied movements to stiff or painful joints to restore their normal range of motion, improve lubrication and reduce pain. Manipulation produces the audible click many people associate with physiotherapy, while mobilisation uses gentler repeated movements to achieve a similar result.
Sports & Soft Tissue Massage uses targeted pressure to release tight muscles, reduce spasm and relieve pain. The pressure is always tailored to your tolerance and can be adjusted at any time.
Myofascial Release uses sustained, subtle pressure on the soft tissues. It is particularly effective for chronic or persistent pain where the affected area is too sensitive for deeper massage.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles to stimulate the release of pain-relieving hormones. It is only used where appropriate and always follows a thorough screening questionnaire.
Ultrasound Therapy uses high frequency sound waves to promote tissue healing, break down scar tissue and improve the flexibility of damaged structures.
Corrective Taping using kinesiotape or Leukotape supports joints, corrects muscle activation and can be worn comfortably during daily activities and sport.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage uses specialist tools to release tension in muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia, particularly effective around joints where muscle mass is limited.
Hands-on treatment is only as effective as the assessment behind it. We take time to understand exactly what is causing your problem before selecting the techniques most likely to resolve it. As your condition changes and improves, so does the treatment approach.
Every technique we use is evidence-based, and nothing is applied without explanation. You’re always in control of your treatment.
Always in Control
Assessment First
We combine clinical expertise with personalized care to speed up your healing and boost long-term performance. With a focus on safety, technique, and progress, your recovery journey is in trusted hands.
At PhysioFitness we’re dedicated to helping you heal and move better. No two patients respond to treatment in the same way. Your hands-on treatment plan is selected and adjusted based on your condition, your tolerance, and your progress.
It covers a range of manual therapy techniques including joint manipulation and mobilisation, sports massage, myofascial release, acupuncture, ultrasound therapy, corrective taping, and instrument assisted soft tissue massage. The techniques used will depend on your condition and assessment.
It shouldn't be. Some techniques involve firm pressure which can feel intense, but treatment is always adjusted to your comfort level. You're in control at every stage and can ask for more or less pressure at any time.
No, you can self-refer and book directly with us. If we identify anything during your assessment that requires further investigation or medical input, we'll advise you accordingly.
This varies depending on your condition and how your body responds to treatment. Some patients see significant improvement within a few sessions, while others with more complex or long-standing problems require a longer course of treatment. We'll give you a realistic expectation at your first appointment.
